I have worked with Google Plus for the past four weeks and I have really found some great features with respect to Google Plus Circles. From my limited experience, I have found Google Plus Circles an invaluable way to organize the following:
- My Reading time
- Highlighting Favorite Posts
- Communicating with a specific group of people.
Google Plus Circles really takes grouping people to a new level. However, lets look at where we have come from with respect to the other social media sites.
Facebook has Lists – The downside is that I can’t just send a message to people in particular lists.
LinkedIn has Tags to use to group your contacts for viewing. Linkedin also has favorites for selecting contacts and viewing them.
Twitter has Lists to follow certain users and it also has favorites to favorite a specific tweet. Unfortunately I cannot send a tweet to a certain list group.
With Google+ Circles, you can setup groups for view purposes AND communication purposes. It really brings the whole communication together unlike the other sites. It may take a little effort at first, but it is well worth the time to segment your followers in a way that focuses on your goals and objectives.
Create a Blank Circle
Yes- you heard me right. Here is why. Once you have created a blank circle like “Read Later”. You can now go into your Google Plus Stream select a post that you want to read later and share it privately with the Circle = “Read Later” – As you see by doing this, you are the only one who can see this post later on.
Create a Favorite Circle
Yes – Follow the same process above as you created the “Read Later” and when you find posts that are really good, you can share them here privately to yourself. Now you could add others to this circle if you want to share these particular favorite posts with your colleagues or people close to you.
Create a Share Circle
To maximize circles, find people that regularly communicate with you and will share your content on a regular basis. These people are invaluable in getting started and helping you communicate your information to others. You can send a message directly to these individuals or at least keep track of them in a certain location.
Make sure to use this Google Plus Circle to communicate with everyone on Google Plus. I use this circle the most.
Final Google Plus Circle Tip
Also, do not forget this final tip when communicating. To really get someone’s attention, send a comment or post directly to them. Type in the “+” followed by the username, (+BrentPohlman ) This formatting is really important if you want to send a message to someone and you do not care if others see it too, very similar to twitter. If you need to follow-up with a personal, confidential message make sure to email the person if the person has setup his/her account to receive emails.
Google Plus Circles are way cool and offer lots of functionality. Learn these cool features today. They are very easy to use and they will really help you get off to a good start on this platform. Remember 5,000 is the most people you can have following you.
